Red Nose Day/Sport Relief – Friday 13rd March
Once again, we will be joining in with Red Nose Day and Sport Relief, raising money for Comic Relief. This year it’s all about Sport Relief – so join in and come to school wearing red and It’s Game On – suggested donation £1.

Year 4 Drumming Concert
Our Year 4 children will be holding a Drumming Concert on Thursday 2nd April for all parents at 2.30pm – all welcome.

Reception visit to Westwood Lodge
We love to get out and about in our community. On Friday 13th our Reception children will be walking to Westwood Lodge to take part in some Easter crafts with the residents.

Community Dance Session at Worsley Mesnes CP School
Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles will be starting a dance group at Worsley Mesnes CP School every Thursday evening 4.40pm – 5.40pm, starting tomorrow, for children ages 7 – 11. Open to all our school community, all welcome, come along and join in! £1 per session.

Chill and Chat – Friday 3rd April
Daffodils Dreams will now be in school on the 1st Friday of every month.Why don’t you pop in for a coffee and a chat?

Homework Fun – Family Challenge
This month’s family challenge we are focusing on balance March Challenge ~ can you balance on one leg? 

Try to balance on one leg, time how long, and encourage and try to beat your last balance score. How long can you do?

FOTSA - Breakfast with the Easter Bunny
Friday 3rd April we will be having a visit from the Easter Bunny, who will be hopping in for some breakfast. £3 per child 8.15am – watch out for letters to book your place.
Scholastic Book Club
Scholastic book leaflets are coming home today and the deadline for orders is Friday 13th March. For every £1 spent, school receives 25p to spend on free books for our school library. Payments can be made by cash, cheque or credit card. Don’t forget that you can spend your World Book Day tokens (that children will bring home tomorrow) on the Scholastic Shop to get £1 off!
Mother’s Day Event – Friday 20th March 2.15 – 3.15pm
At Worsley Mesnes we love working together, so on Friday 20th March we invite all Mums, Grandmas, Aunties etc into school to work with your child/ren. Please book a place at our school office ~ booking is essential.

Easter Bingo
FOTSA are holding their annual Easter Bingo on Thursday 2nd April, eyes down 6pm in our school hall, come along and have some fun!

Friends of the School Family Trip – Saturday 2nd January 2021.
We are looking at visiting Southport Little Theatre on Saturday 2nd January, panto and times to be confirmed. Price will be £15 per person, if you are interested, please speak to Mrs Davies/Mrs Fairhurst and look out for the letter with the details to book your place, please note deadline is Friday 3rd April to book any places.

Corona Virus

Advice for parents/guardians

You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your child catching Corona Virus. There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend school as normal.

What action you can take

A UK wide campaign has been launched to provide clear advice on how to slow the spread of Corona Virus. Please help to support the campaign which promotes basic hygiene practices, such as regularly washing hands and always sneezing into a tissue, to stem the spread of viruses.

Homework Fun – Family Challenge.
This month’s family challenge, Time to Talk February Challenge ~ Time to Talk As this week is Children’s Mental Health Week, your child will bring home a ‘My Feel Good Journal’. Please take the time to look and complete these with your child/ren and once completed return them and share them with us. Don’t forget to send in a photo of different places you have visited and had time for a chat ~ for a chance to win this month’s prize!

Billinge Family Church U Matter Café
A note from Billinge Family Church: In response to the needs identified within our local community we will be opening our U
Matter Café very soon. Many of the people who come through our door are facing difficulties and as a charity we take
the time to offer them a drink and provide a friendly ear. Free hot drinks, toast and pastries will be on offer to anyone in need of support and someone to talk to. The café will be open from Monday to Friday 10am – 1pm here at our centre where we have
access to clothing and food and also the ability to sign post to other services if necessary.
All Welcome.

Children’s Mental Health Week – 3rd– 9th February
The theme for this year is ‘Find your Brave’. Life is all about taking small brave steps every day. Bravery could be about
sharing worries and asking for help when you need it, trying something new or making the right choices.

On Thursday 6th February – Leigh Community Trust will be visiting school, starting the day with an assembly and then delivering class workshops looking at what is brave, by using drama, movement and stories. Our children will all be bringing a ‘feel good’ journal home to complete at home – for 5 days, we are going to stop and think of positive thoughts and feelings and write them in our journals. Remember to bring the journal back to school when it’s complete so we can share it together.

Wigan Today – ‘Wigan Restaurants hygiene rating’
We are very proud to announce that we were published in the latest round up of Wigan Todays hygiene ratings.
We scored the highest rating of 5. Well done Worsley Mesnes CP!

Visitor to School – Antony Wootten
Antony Wootten, author of A Tiger Too Many, The Grubby Feather Gang and Grown-ups Can’t Be Friends With Dragons, will once again be visiting our school. On Friday 31st January he will be providing a series of writing workshops for our key stage 2
children. He will also be available at 3.20pm if you wish to speak to him and purchase any books,
 he will also sign the books, the books are aimed at Key Stage 2 children:

Year 6 – RSE Education
On Friday 17th January, Year 6 will be starting their RSE (relationships & sex education). This is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up. If any parents/carers would like more information or have a look at what we teach/resources, please see Mrs Davies.

Triple P – Positive Parenting Programme
Mrs Davies would like to run a Triple P course for parents/carers. Triple P is a parenting and family support system designed to
prevent/support behavioural/emotional problems in children. It aims to equip parents with the skills and confidence they need
to be self-sufficient and to be able to manage family issues without ongoing support. These sessions will be very informal, pop in for a coffee and enjoy the sessions – starting 2.30pm on Tuesday 28th January. Please let Mrs Davies know if you would like to take part in Triple P, but cannot make 2.30pm on Tuesday 28th January.

This term if your child’s attendance is over 97%, they will be entered in our end of term prize draw for a chance to win an amazon fire tablet. Prize draw – Friday 3rd April.

Homework Fun – Family Challenge.
This month’s family challenge, we are focusing on hand skills Multi-Sensory Letters Can you make some letters using lots of senses? Try making letters out of pipe cleaners, sandpaper, playdough, spaghetti or have a go at drawing letters in flour, sand,
lentils or shaving foam.

Community Dance Session at Worsley Mesnes CP School
Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles will be starting a dance group at Worsley Mesnes CP School every Thursday evening 4.40pm – 5.40pm, starting tomorrow, for children ages 7 – 11. Open to all our school community, all welcome, come along and join in! £1 per session. – starting Thursday 16th January.

Nasal Flu
Nasal flu took place on Wednesday 11th December for those who submitted a consent form in Reception to Year 6.
If you submitted a consent form but was absent on that Wednesday, they will do a catch up in January 2020, we will keep you updated with the date.

Tread UK
Tread UK will be delivering an after school club every Wednesday, starting 15th January at a cost (payable on the first session) of £20 per child. Come along and learn new outdoor skills, fire lighting, orienteering etc. Lots of

Chill and Chat – 7th February

Frost Festival
Free festive event at Mesnes Park, Wigan – Saturday 14th December 11am – 4.30pm. Live music, makers market, craft workshops etc and a fireworks spectacular at 4.15pm. 

An item of jewellery has been found outside of the Year 3 classroom.
It has been handed in to our school office. If you think it might be yours, please go to the office and describe it, so that we can return it to you.

Drumming Concert
Year 4 Drumming Concert will be held in school on Thursday 12th December at 2.30pm

Team Time
Well done to this terms winner’s – Bradley Wiggins. All the children in Bradley Wiggins took part in making a Christmas Bauble and watching a film.

Christmas Dinner
Wednesday 18th December is our Christmas Dinner Day. If your child does not currently have school meals and would to participate in the Christmas Dinner can you please ensure that you have a school grid account and that you have paid for your meal prior to the 18th December. Check with our school office if you are unsure if you have a school grid account. If your account has lapsed you can re send a link to enable the account but activation must be within 24 hours of the activation being sent to your email account.

Breakfast with Santa
Thursday 19th December, Santa will be visiting school to have breakfast from 8.15am - £3 per child. Please see the office for further details.

Year 5 & Year 6 – RSE Education
During this term and next term, we will be delivering puberty & sex related education to our Year 5 & Year 6 children, in our PSHCE & Science lessons. Parents are entitled to remove their children from these lessons.

We are currently selling Christmas ‘Flumpets’ at our School Office, all proceeds are for Wigan & Leigh Hospice - £2 each.

Christmas Jumpers
We all love Christmas, so during December we will be wearing our Christmas Jumpers on every Friday.

Christmas Entertainer / Movie Night – FOTSA Christmas Events
Tuesday – 3 rd December 3.20pm-4.30pm – our Reception, Year 1 & 2 are invited to stay and watch our entertainer, letters out next week, £2 per child.
Thursday 5th December 6pm-8pm
– our KS2 are invited back into school to watch our Christmas movie, with refreshments, letters out next week, £2 per child.

Christmas Fayre – Friday 6th December
Our FOTSA Christmas Fayre will be held in school on Friday 6th December 3.30pm, hope you can pop in and join us! Lots of exciting stalls & games and Santa will be visiting! Please support us by bringing in an item (or 2) for our stalls: Soft cuddly animals, chocolate, full plastic bottles, Christmas gift bags - Thank you :)

Children in Need – Friday 15th November – Wear odd socks & Spots
We again will be raising money to support the fantastic Children in Need Appeal, wear spots to school for a donation. At the end of the day, we will be selling hot dogs & juice on our school playground for 50p, all money will go to the appeal.

We raised a fantastic £246 - Thank you for your support!

Homework Fun – Family Challenge.

This month’s family challenge, we are focusing on using our knife and fork. How did you eat your dinner last night? At the table, or on your lap in front of the telly? With a knife and fork or with a spoon, or our fingers?
Mealtimes are an important aspect of family life, take time to sit and chat at the table, using our skills cutting and using our knife and fork.

Exciting news – we again will be taking the whole school to visit the cinema on Wednesday 4th December, we will be watching Abominable.

Anti Bullying Week – Change Starts with Us.
Monday 11th November is the start of our Anti Bullying Week. Small Change, Big Difference, Whether it’s verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well into adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone; because together, we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with working together.

Welfare Assistant Wanted
We are looking for a new welfare assistant to join us for our lunchtimes, if you are interested or would like more information, please speak to Mrs Davies or our school office.

British Legion Poppy Appeal
Our school office have started to sell a range of items for the poppy appeal: zip pull & reflector, suggested donations 50p, silicon wristband, suggested donation £1 and snap bands, suggested donation £1.50.

Parking around school
Please be mindful of our neighbours when parking near school, by not blocking driveways, parking on pavements and double parking as this is a hazard for pedestrians and other car users. Let’s keep our children safe. We also promote walking to school, why not try and park further away from school and walk some of the way, park and stride; keeping our area around school free and safe, and getting fit along the way!

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our FOTSA Halloween Disco, due to not enough adult helpers, we always ensure the correct ratio of adults to children. We would really like to continue with our Friends of the School Association and
need parents to help – if you would like to help, please see Mrs Davies.

World Mental Health Day
Thursday 10th October is World Mental Health Day, this day gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues and advocate against social stigma. At Worsley Mesnes we are here for parents/carers as well as all our children, pop in if for a tea and talk, always welcome!
Join in and make a green ribbon or can you think of 5 ways to be kind to yourself?

Homework Fun – Family Challenge.
This month’s family challenge, we are focusing on using two hands together!
Cooking – kneading dough, stirring thick mixture whilst holding the bowl, rubbing margarine into flour, using a rolling pin, spreading butter on toast or spreading icing onto biscuits, are all things to try using two hands and to enjoy together.
Don’t forget to send in a photo, for a chance to win this month’s prize!

Year 6 – Film
Our Year 6 class will be watching the film version of ‘Holes’ next week. As this film has a rating of PG can parents/carers let Mrs Southern know by Monday 14th October, if you do not want your child to watch this.

Tempest Photography - Monday 7th October

Children who have siblings who are babies/toddlers are welcome to attend at 8.30am on Monday 7th October 2019 to have their photographs taken. Sibling groups that are within school will be photographed from 9am onwards (please do not attend the 8.30am slot as this is only for those with babies/toddlers) After sibling groups have been taken then individual photographs will be taken.

Parent Governor Ballot

3 candidates have applied for the 2 vacancies for Parent Governor therefore a parental ballot will be held. One ballot paper per parent. Ballot papers are being sent home Wednesday 2nd October. Close of ballot is Friday 11th October 2019 at 4pm. Please return your ballot paper in a sealed envelope as the ballot papers will be kept unopened until the count. Please do not sign or identify yourself in any way on the ballot paper or the envelope. All you need to put on the envelope is “Ballot Paper” and nothing else. Thank you.

Applying for Reception Class September 2020

Parents have between the 30th September 2019 and 15th January 2020 to state their preferences for their preferred school.We understand from Wigan Council that they are not producing printed copies of the application form or booklet as all information is on their website. If any parent is unable to access the application form or booklet they can request a printed copy by contacting the School Organisation Team on 01942 489013.

Online Applications

The online application service will be open from 30th September 2019. There is a link available from the Wigan Council website on the Primary School admissions page. Parents can also access the “Applying for a place at Primary School 2020/21” booklet via this page.

Paper version application form

A copy of the paper version of the application is attached to our website (home page) for you to download or you can call at the school office for a paper version. Parents are instructed to return their Wigan Council primary school application form to any Wigan Primary School. The form includes a receipt, which school staff will sign and hand back to you.

Rugby World Cup Themed Lunch 3/10/19

On Thursday 4th October we will be holding a Rugby World Cup themed lunch. The menu is:

Parent Governor

Cutting Grapes
Grapes should always be cut lengthwise so that they can pass more easily through smaller throats. Either slice them downwards in half , or for smaller babies, you might want to cut them lengthwise again into quarters.

Free School Meals Eligibility and Pupil Premium
An application form is going home for parents/carers to apply for free school meals and pupil premium, please ensure these are completed and returned to school by 1 st October. This form will allow the Local Authority to check and then subsequently advise your child’s school if they are eligible to receive a free school meal. This is so that the school can claim for the pupil premium funding.
Important: If you do not wish to claim a free school meal we will still share the eligibility status with your school to enable them to claim the pupil premium funding. This may be the case for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who are entitled to universal free school meals.
Universal Credits: If you are currently receiving Universal Credits please take into school the letter of confirmation in addition to completing the form below. All parents in receipt of Universal Credits are entitled to claim free school meals for their children in the interim. The DWP and DfE intend on publishing a threshold of income in the future and so your entitlement to free school meals may change once this is published. In addition to getting a free school meal it will also mean that your child can receive a reduction in the price of school trips.
School benefit as well by receiving Pupil Premium Grant funding which provides vital funding for support staff, subsidies, intervention groups, resources and pastoral support for your children. We wish to encourage everyone who is in receipt of any of the above to apply by 1st October 2019.

Aldi Stickers

We’re collecting Team GB stickers – help us collect 300 stickers to complete our poster in school and we will receive an exclusive sports kit, plus a chance to win £20,000.

CAP Money : Course

Walk to School Week
We always encourage our children to walk to school and we take part in the Living Streets WOW Challenge and children log how they have arrived to school each day, achieving and collecting badges each month. October is National Walk to School Month, so on week commencing 14th October, Wigan Council will be sending us our Walk to School Passports to continue to encourage our children to walk to school. Join in with us, have fun, keep healthy and complete your passport!

FOTSA Halloween Disco
Our Friends of the School Association will once again be holding a Halloween Disco, this will be held on Wednesday 30th October and fancy dress is optional. Letters will be sent home next week!

Please be aware that it is now time for Year 6 to apply for Secondary Education for September 2020. The closing date for applications is 31st October 2019.  The preferred method of application by the admissions team of Wigan Council is online.

Helpers Urgently Needed!!
Have you got a spare half an hour on a Monday or Thursday morning, around 10am?
We desperately need helpers to come into school and make toast for our children’s morning snack, if you can help, please contact the office.

Please remember, every Wednesday 8.30 – 8.55, Miss Ainscough will be in our Hippo Zone if you would like to pop in and join Unify. Come along and start saving, just putting a small amount each week into a bank account will soon mount up to a good saving. One of the most important things you can do is start a conversation with your child about money and the importance of savings. Let thing know how to save up for things that they really want, in addition illustrate how much their money can grow over time if they save. Let them bring in a little each week, for example 50p, and watch it grow!

Homework Fun – Family Challenge.
Each month on our Newsletter, we will set a family challenge. If your child brings into school a photo/work, completing the family challenge, they will be entered in a prize draw, and the winner announced during our Friday’s celebration assembly. Take part and have fun!!
This month’s family challenge is: play a card game together, such as ‘Snap’, ‘Happy Families’, ‘Uno’. This activity will also improve visual memory skills, have fun.

MacMillan Coffee – Calling all bakers!!
Once again we will be taking part in the World’s Largest Coffee Event on Friday 27th September 3.20 – 4.15pm, in our school hall.. Please try and pop in and enjoy a coffee and a cake with us. All donations will go to MacMillan Cancer Support. Cake donations appreciated.

Attendance Matters
At Worsley Mesnes your children’s attendance is very important to us and we aim for every child to achieve 97+%. Having an excellent attendance will help give your child the best possible start in life and achieve to their full potential. This year if your child achieves 97+% attendance, they have the chance of winning a brand new scooter with helmet – all children achieving 97+% attendance will be entered into our prize draw at the end of the year. All children with 100% will take part in the activity, along with the class with the highest percentage over the year.

If you experience any problem in logging your child’s allergens/dietary requirements please notify the office as soon as possible and the office team will give assistance in ensuring your child’s allergens/dietary needs are recorded. 

Please remember – we are a Nut-Free School, please do not send your children in with any products which contain nuts. Thank you.

Wigan Authority – Education Penalty Notice for Non-School Attenders
A letter has been sent home from Wigan Council regarding penalty notice for school nonattenders. The local authority can issue a penalty notice to parents/carers if a child has missed a number of sessions without permission from school. If your child falls within one or more of these categories within a 12 week period
 10 sessions (5 days) of unauthorised absence with under 90% attendance
 20 sessions (10 days) of unauthorised absence
 Persistently arrives late for school after the close of registration.
